What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic disease that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot use the insulin it produces effectively.
Insulin is a hormone that enables cells to take in glucose from the blood and use it for energy. When the body fails to produce insulin, or when the body does not use the insulin properly, or both, this leads to raised glucose (sugar) levels in the blood (hyperglycaemia).
