Eating healthy

People with diabetes don’t have to follow a special diet; it’s basically the same as recommended for everyone who wants to live healthy. It’s important to make sure you eat lots of high-fibre and low-fat foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Reducing the intake of sweets, saturated fats and refined carbohydrates is also recommended.

A dietician or nurse can help with establishing a balanced diet. People with diabetes type 2 who are overweight should lose some weight. Apart from the health benefits, a healthy weight will help to reduce blood glucose levels.

Physical activity

Exercising on a daily base is good for everyone, particularly for people with diabetes type 2. It is advised to exercise at least 30 minutes a day. This could be jogging, swimming, cycling, dancing, aerobics, etc. It’s best to choose an activity that gets you a little out of breath and sweating. It’s possible to spread the physical activity over the day.

For example 15 minutes of jogging in the morning and 15 minutes of aerobic exercises in the evening. A combination of aerobics with strength exercises helps control glucose levels in an effective way. Before starting a physical activity, it is important to check glucose levels as activity lowers these levels.

Monitoring blood glucose levels

Carefully checking glucose levels is the only way to keep them within the target range. Some people can manage their glucose levels with diet and exercising alone but many people with diabetes type 2 need diabetes medication or insulin therapy. Medication is used in addition to and not instead of lifestyle changes. A doctor can advice which medication which treatment is best.
